Continuous Evaluation of Methods for Sensor Data Fusion of Video-Based Driver Assistance Systems, Using Virtual Road Tests

The vehicle of the future will support drivers in critical situations and alert them to potential hazards by means of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Sensor-based perception of the relevant traffic conditions and situation is essential in this context. The current evaluation approach of real-world road tests will no longer be sufficient due to the high complexity of the system interactions. New simulation methods are needed to test and evaluate ADAS, using virtual road tests with realistic vehicle behavior and a complex traffic environment. This paper describes a new simulation technology which has the capability of integrating virtual cameras in addition to the commonly known environment sensors (Radar, Lidar, ultrasonic) in the CarMaker vehicle dynamics simulation for functional testing of sensor data fusion algorithms.

Simulation-based homologation of brakes for trailers

From 2011 onwards, electronic stability controls (ESC) have to be integrated into heavy commercial vehicles. Thus, it is now permitted to use simulation systems to cope with the increasing certification requirements.

Haldex Brake Products and IPG Automotive realized the first simulation-based homologation according to the requirements of the ECE 13 / 11 regulations. The simulation project tested electronic stability functions for truck trailers. The use of the TruckMaker simulation software for these purposes opens up new possibilities for virtual test driving.

Substantial Progress of Virtual Driver Skills in Interaction with Advanced Control Systems to meet the new Challenges of Vehicle Dynamics Simulation

In recent years, virtual test driving has become increasingly important in the automotive development process, mainly to increase efficiency, reduce costs and handle complexity.

The more chassis control and driver assistance systems are integrated in a vehicle the more load cases are necessary to test overall vehicle performance, system functions and fail-safe mechanisms. Open-loop maneuvers provide good indications about vehicle handling. Yet there must be a reason why test engineers continue to use the Nürburgring or public roads. The complexity of the maneuvers and test scenarios makes a generalized driver model approach very complex. The driver model has to cover a wide range of driving scenarios – from physical limit handling to reverse driving tasks in parking situations Fig. 1”. With a purely signal based approach (re-drive of profiles) such challenges could not be seriously addressed. Real-world test drivers are task driven based on clear test instructions, which must be fully reflected in a driver model, too.

Advantages of a Thermomechanical Tire Model for Vehicle Dynamics

The TameTire model developed by Michelin represents a breakthrough in vehicle dynamics simulation.

The module by IPG has been integrated into its CarMaker simulation platform and extended by new functions. Even at a very early development stage, the tire can be incorporated into the parameter space of the vehicle-tire interaction, both for achieving targets and for tolerance studies.

The impending mandatory fitting of heavy commercial vehicles with electronic stability control and other advanced driver assistance systems in the European Union will result in a dramatic increase in development, testing and certification requirements. Highly capable simulation tools have been specifically designed to handle the enormous complexity of simulation to complement conventional realworld tests. Haldex and IPG Automotive achieved the first successful simulationbased homologation according to the requirements of the ECE 13/11 regulations.

The thermal and mechanical tyre model TameTire, developed by Michelin, represents a new breakthrough in tyre modelling to simulate handling. IPG has integrated TameTire into its leading-edge CarMaker vehicle dynamics simulation platform. This article looks at the advantages which TameTire provides over state-of-the-art mathematical models for handling simulation, as well as its integration into IPG CarMaker.
