The future has a sensor. Location Awareness meets Powertrain Controls
Good, bad or grungy: The location-aware future is here. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android brought location aware apps into the mainstream: Millions of people are now walking around with a gizmo in their pocket that not only knows where they are, but also connects to the web to share that info, merges it with databases, and finds out who and what is in the neighborhood. As we all know from system dynamics: This one new input – our coordinates – has the potential to change all the outputs. The way we shop, we communicate and we socialize. Will it also reduce our carbon-dioxide outputs?

Complex test scenarios for virtual test driving by mouse click
The development of advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive distance control, collision avoidance systems or lane departure warning systems requires comprehensive testing to assure their functionality. Increasingly capable simulation tools, which help to keep testing requirements under control, are now available for this purpose. In addition, highly capable traffic models are necessary to generate the increasingly complex test scenarios required for virtual test driving. IPG Automotive GmbH, the leading provider of simulation and test tools for virtual test driving, offers a fitting solution in the field of traffic models: IPGTraffic.

V204_Advanced_Vehicle_Dynamics_Simulation_TameTire
Advanced vehicle dynamics simulation by physical modelling with transient tire behavior of TameTire
Extended by new functionalities, the tire model TameTire can now be linked to a complete vehicle model. This enhanced model makes it easier to understand the influence of the tire’s functional parameters, the climatic environment and the influence of tire temperature development on the handling behavior of a passenger car and its four tires. Even at a very early development stage the tire can be incorporated into the parameter space of the vehicle-tire interaction by using TameTire, both for achieving targets and for tolerance studies.

V203_Advanced_Steering_System_Models
The Application of Advanced Steering System Models in Vehicle Dynamics Simulation
As steering characteristics, particularly steering wheel torque, have been determined as the key aspect in vehicle lateral dynamics, the models must be able to accurately predict steering wheel torque. Therefore, Advanced Steering System Models have been developed and implemented in virtual environments such as IPG CarMaker to simulate steering characteristics and handling performance. A wide range of vehicle tests involving the analysis of vehicle dynamics, steering characteristics and steering feel can be easily performed.

V202_Reducing_Fuel_Consumption_Toyota
The Prospects of Reducing Fuell Consumption by Improved Vehicle Efficiency under Consideration of Global Vehicle Dynamics
Energy efficiency is an important topic in today’s vehicle development. To assess the fuel economy potential of various measures Toyota examined various innovative technologies in comprehensive test series. The measures that led to a significant reduction of fuel consumption were presented based on a compact vehicle with hybrid technology. Through improved vehicle efficiency fuel consumption can be cut nearly in half.

V200_Reducing_Fuel_Consumption
Reducing Fuel Consumption by Improved Vehicle Efficiency
The challenge of fuel consumption reduction has a strong focus in vehicle development. Toyota has evaluated different scenarios of fuel consumption potential based on existing and in near future available technologies. The presented measures of improved vehicle efficiency will be illustrated at a compact vehicle with a hybrid powertrain, which can reduce fuel consumption by nearly the half.

V199_Conduct_by_Wire
Integrated Concept for Maneuver-Based Driver Assistance
Can a vehicle in normal day-to-day traffic situations be conducted without continuous stabilization inputs but almost exclusively by maneuver commands? The Institute of Automotive Engineering (FZD) and the Institute of Ergonomics (IAD) of Technische Universität Darmstadt are exploring this question.
To answer it, a simulation in IPG CarMaker and Matlab/Simulink is used during the DFG funded Conduct-by-Wire research project.
