Programmable failsafe-testing with the FailSafeTester

Fault insertion testing is an important aspect of automotive ECU testing. Traditional test methods require that the test engineer manually remove and plug cables using a breakout box. However, this kind of testing is far from ideal. Being able to program the real-time insertion of all types of electrical faults would greatly improve the testing process.

 

IPG's FailSafeTester is a microprocessor controlled device that can physically generate real-time electrical faults between two or more electrical components (Failure Insertion Unit). The user can control the operation through a graphical user interface or via a simple scripting language. The hardware can then modify the electrical signals which are exchanged between the devices.

 

For example, the cable tree connecting an automotive ECU to the sensors, actuators, and CANbus (or the simulated signals if HIL is being used) can be severed and all signals wired through the FailSafeTester. Electrical faults such as cable breakage, loose contacts, corrosion, short circuits and leakage currents can be interactively or programatically inserted (at a specific time or event) and the behavior of the control unit(s) and vehicle observed.
