Fast creation, easy variation and simple re-use of traffic scenarios


The development of advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive distance control, collision avoidance systems or lane departure warning systems requires comprehensive testing to assure their functionality. Increasingly capable simulation tools, which help to keep testing requirements under control, are now available for this purpose. In addition, highly capable traffic models are necessary to generate the increasingly complex test scenarios required for virtual test driving. IPG Automotive GmbH, the leading provider of simulation and test tools for virtual test driving, offers a fitting solution in the field of traffic models: IPGTraffic. Along with the recently released latest version 3.5 of the open integration and test platform CarMaker the IPGTraffic model has been extended by significant functions as well. IPGTraffic allows the convenient creation of test scenarios which can be easily varied, reproduced and re-used as needed. Thanks to an intuitive operating concept that assures maximum user friendliness test engineers can fully focus their attention on testing.

Intuitive operating concept for convenient set-up of tests

A well-structured, intuitive user surface allows even complex traffic scenarios with numerous mobile and immobile traffic objects to be quickly and easily configured. They can also be imported from existing test databases by mouse click. High traffic density is generated by simply multiplying groups of objects. In addition, test scenarios that have been created can be easily varied. Particularly the high re-usability of existing data provides higher efficiency in setting up tests. The allocation of individual properties to the various traffic objects or maneuver events in longitudinal and lateral dynamics is done by mouse click as well. Another advantage that further increases productivity is the fact that no model modifications have to be made when creating the test scenarios.

 

High performance capability of the overall simulation in real time

The simulation itself delivers compelling capabilities as well. The complete CarMaker simulation environment – including the vehicle, driver, road and traffic – calculates nearly 1000 objects in real time (in other words a cycle time of one millisecond) with extreme accuracy. Since all traffic objects are dynamically allocated to the simulation’s runtime the overall simulation remains lean, transparent and capable. Contrary to conventional systems concrete maneuver events can be allocated to the traffic objects. This means that longitudinal and lateral dynamics are freely parameterized and the start and end conditions flexibly established. This provides the basis for generating reproducible scenarios between the test vehicle and the traffic environment. Another new function provides the option of defining a real-time criterion as a start, transition and end criterion. This allows every maneuver step to be started and ended by an incoming event with millisecond accuracy. This freely parameterizable access to all condition parameters opens up numerous new possibilities to reconstruct complex, reproducible traffic scenarios.
